A very good article. What can be used to entertain (illusion) can be also used to con (deception). The best advice I can give is to ignore all phone, text and email messages from supposed banks, government institutions and agencies.
Instead, call these places yourself. For example, here in Canada the federal tax people (CRA).will.never call or text, but either send you an email to go to your secure in box on its dedicated site or send you a letter to your home address.
Thank you Perry, you can’t underestimate the inventiveness of a crook. With your money, they also grab a piece of your soul. I’m TS very heartbreaking. To avoid it, we have to stay smart and diligent. Joyce mentioned a scam where the con artist calls your phone and hangs up. You call them back and when you do so or if you do so you are paying for an expensive phone call.

Text messages from ‘couriers’ that you need to pay VAT on a parcel, phone calls from ‘the police crime squad’, that message your friend received, etc. WhatsApps from a ‘family member’ in trouble askun you to send some money, the list is endless.
The emails from your ‘bank’ used to be so poorly written that you knew it was a fake, these days they’re AI written complete with bank logo.

A scam started the minute I downloaded it. Needless to say I’ve deleted it. The deception is so much greater then a few short years ago when some obvious con artist from another continent sent letters with misspelled words. It’s so much more sophisticated. The criminal ingenuity has no limits. It’s easy to change an email header (hover across the email address with a mouse and it shows the hidden address), or they use a temporary email address.
The ‘Microsoft people’ calling about a vulnerability in your pc are still working their trick.
There’s also one where you’re being called but they seem to disconnect before you can answer. If you’d call that number, a phone appears to be ringing, sometimes a tape saying you’re being put through. It’s a phone scam. The moment you hear that phone ringing, it’s already connected to an expensive payed number and you can end up with a large phone bill.
I’m so happy I only answer the phone if they know the person or if they leave a message for me to call them back. I rarely get calls from anyone other than my friends because I have tried diligently to not give away my phone number. My husband on the other hand has our old phone number which used to be our home number and every day he must receive about 10 phone calls from strangers. He ignores them!
I’m happy you recognize a scam when see one! I have heard about the VAT tax scam in England. A friend of mine had it happen to her. 😞
I’ve got an app ‘Truecaller’ which identifies calls and can block numbers.
You can still get those calls Charlotte. Phone numbers have 9 basic digits… crimals just use a laptop to randomly search for 9 digit numbers until they find one that’s connected. Could be slightly different per country but that’s the modus operandi

I see scammers / scam attempts 25/8 but I rarely hear the actual stories of them succeeding — especially in such a creepy way where they targeted her physical location and she handed the money off to a person. I think what Billy has is an excellent mind that excels in building monopolies… In addition the tracking app that he and his cohorts were pushing is one used in “Contact Tracing” developed by the WHO as a very sophisticated and highly intrusive piece of code that can be effective in tracking disease or destroying a personal credit, social media and seeding mistrust among ones closest friends. The perfect tool for the would-be Tyrant.
It is a bit of a chilling thought to think that Microsoft has joined forces with the CCP in their efforts to conceal and concentrate their hold on the internet and establish a social credit score as well as his hold on social media. The factors that feature in such scammers is almost always in broad daylight as it provides more credence to their confidence game can and often does originate from Institutional quarters such as the Burning of the Reichstag, that paved the Hitler’s grasp of power, very similar the what we now know was a complete hoax perpetrated on January 6th, the thing is that they're are very powerful corporate powers that add ligament powers like things such as the Patriot Act. Little did people think at the time it would be twisted upon those it was intended to protect. Now earlier this evening I was looking over various cybersecurity Instances when I came across this site in the UK talking about the real deal silver bullet had arrived in the new Microsoft box… Which one guy objected that those two words should not grace space in the same sentence, to sit I tend to agree, I mean the main corporate offices were hacked and it was not just a run-of-the-mill rootkit that installs some back door on some nondescript email server that's regularly backed up at the end of the day… It was their head honcho's personal security key with full security access the virtual keys to the kingdom. I'm OSCP so I read threatWire Red Hat, and read all security bulletins I can lay hands on, and made mentioned to a friend that I was working on some Discord integration who will go nameless so as not be associated with celebrity tagging or name dropping but who is recently married and who hubby happens to have a position with LinkedIn… After I gave her a heads up I start getting the third degree from Linkined and my membership suspended. Now I have been around and aound this block before and listened to some pretty grandiose plans, I've even offered a couple myself, but I cut my teeth on FreeBSD and built one of the first personal secure servers in this part of the Blue Ridge utilizing Bind9 from FreeBSD when it was still in development and using Red Hat 5.2 RPM with which we were able to extract the necessary version information To compile a 7.1 seawolf, so I do understand security and have my own projects that I keep to myself. I do believe (security-enhanced Linux) SELinux is adequate but the addition of a Pfsense firewall with Cisco and Cloudflare makes a fairly secure system. LinkedIn gave me the 3rd degree like my RSA security scripts were not enough… Told me “What I needed to do was to use this Microsoft security app (read tracker) and and upping their privileges to full Administrative root (On my server) or lose my membership to their snotty little portal. I think it is prudent take all this need to hand over the keys to your security so we can keep you safe with a grain of salt… I took it as a clear shot over the bow and locked my servers down like Fort Knox. Just saying you all be careful out there. I've got a little feature called Zero Trust from CloudFlare, It seems to work nicely.

Great trick btw. A similar thing happened to me via Match.com and trying to reach them. I googled the number and got a phoney help line . The woman spent time explaining to me my account had been hacked and it got crazier from there and to sum it sum it up she wanted me to go to the parking lot of a local cvs or walgreens and call her. It was then I said "I think you're scamming me too and hung up." Apparently they have cash machines there that will transfer money asap. Of course as cheap as I am I would never send money for my stupid dating site. I hung up and changed my email etc. I agree beware! Just hang up.
Yes! Something similar happened to a friend of mine through her FB. They sent her to CVS to the Bitcoin machine. The machine didn’t work for her and she was expected at work for her evening job. So she told them while she was at CVS she would talk again to them the next day. Their attitude changed and she detected their desperation. The spell was broken. So she knew then it was a scam.
