What a gift this performance was! I'm an amateur magician from Cincinnati and remember singing in this same Music Hall with the Cincinnati Boy's Choir when I was just a lad. The orchestra, the dancing, the amazing illusions, the costumes, and the production value, make me proud to be a Cincinnati kid (at heart). Bravo!
Thank you so much Dale! I am so happy you enjoyed the piece. We worked with Erich several times. So much fun. And the Cincinnati Playhouse? Did you ever see performances there? The abracadabra show? We are proud of that production about five different years. Cincinnati is one of my favorite cities in the United States!
Great article! Yeah as DJ in clubs and live events, we had to have a BMI or ASCAP Card with us, and there were Big Label goons who drove up on us to check. Without the card, they can close an EDM dance club instantly. I feel Your pain over that copyright nightmare hassle.
Thank you, I appreciate your support! I have no problem now. Randy, my husband is my music machine. I’m so blessed to have him. I didn’t know that about the music goons! 😳
Many thanks, Michael, for taking the time to read and comment. I appreciate your support, and Nietzsche was not wrong when he said that “without music life would be a mistake.” Great quote! 🤗
Wow! I am greatly impressed. You know things :) Yes, live music is magic because it's ALIVE and it's in the room. I love how much you love it. What an exciting story. I am glad you had those experiences in those great halls. Whenever I have been able to play in a beautiful place like that, it has always been so much more thrilling. Playing in a place conducive to good sound resonance is priceless. Although, it can be too good. I played in a huge church kind of like a cathedral once. It was ridiculously huge and high ceilinged and the notes repeated before they disappeared. It was impossible to play what I had meant which was a quick and clean piece of classical music. I had to switch to a slow legato to translate into that space I was in. Lucky for me, I knew a thing or two by then. The best place I ever played was probably the Tupperware convention centers auditorium. I wasn't a visiting musician though. Just a security guard working the night shift. There was one hour a night that I could just fluff off and go play the grand piano in the auditorium. It was an amazing piano. I had some of my best piano moments there, all by myself.
I appreciate your kind words, compliments, and support. I wish I could play music or sing, but God didn’t give me that talent. You must have looked forward to playing the grand piano every night! Not everyone gets a chance to do so. It must have sounded great. You should write about it. I'd love to read more! Blessings to you. I'm overjoyed this Substack made you happy and brought back fond memories 🤗
Thank you for sharing these beautiful memories! Your description of hearing the orchestra warm up from your dressing room is spot on--such a thrill. There’s nothing like watching a theatrical performance with live music played by an orchestra. The synergy between what’s happening onstage and “in the pit” is, as you say, magical. Thanks for another great read!
Thank you Amanda, I know you relate. Symphonic music played live is definitely a sound I truly miss! I’m not sure in my lifetime I will hear it again. But my husband is a musician and a composer and a sound expert. So all the sound in our house is exquisite. I will be performing my new magic videos of chorus to his music. I’m looking forward to the experience.
i just found....Kobra, do you know that they started in in 1996? I checked yesterday in the net.,
I think that those times were better, although they call us "losers", you lived in bad times, but it's not true, see, there was not that much momentum on the Internet, you would have to, although such a beautiful and talented, hard-working woman like Would you be able to cope with a million new social media outlets? Do you have described your entire career? i will be delighted to read it..)))
you take care of yourself ) and thank you for informing me )
you wrote that lived in Germany as well, so i thought that you might know this series TV one, I wrote that also cause were surprised that its the longest crime story i ever hears since 1996 until 2022 .... i was really under impression :) this reminds me of variety of nice things :) some of us ( have you noticed?) look back... searching for good memories ... one man wrote that yesterday, ok, take care hope you got a good day )
OMG, Charlotte!!! SO FAST. WOW!!! Stunning each and every time!! You’re right - the live orchestra alters the entire energy. This is amazing. Which Depeche Mode songs were you using? The same thing happened to The Wonder Years when they tried to release a boxed set. Licensing was covered for television but not for home video market distribution and acquiring the rights to all of those massive classics was mad expensive. So they had to postpone the release until they could work it out, acquiring some of the licensing and reediting some of the scenes for compliance. Daunting, especially when you’re trying to maintain the integrity of the piece, like you said. (And thank you for the reminder - I need to attempt to make your chili recipe!!) 💗
Thank you, Demi! I miss those remarkable times of performing: magicians and other variety artists, including circuses used to travel by train touring across the United States. A giant orchestra would always in accompany these shows. That was during the time of Houdini, Dante Blackstone etc. Then the 50s came and shows became less elaborate as performers turn from vaudeville to night clubs. I began my career at the very tail end of the night club era so I was able to enjoy the live orchestration. Nothing compares to performing with a symphony though. We had an entire tour lined up with symphonies and then 911 happened fracturing their entire industry.
I can’t remember which Depeche Mode song we used. I will have to look back through my old notes. Lol. I do notice that many of the videos showing our work on YouTube have been musically altered. In other words originally on the TV performance of the illusion we used our chosen popular music. In the original recording. But later on the Internet music has been replaced with royalty free music. All about licensing. And recently what that whole strike was about in Hollywood.
Randy is an excellent composer in a arranger and has written all the music for my new illusions which I will be presenting in video form sometime late winter early spring. Fortunately for myself I won’t have the same problems as most performers when trying to present their videos online. Especially if they are monetize.
It’s amazing opportunity to be intimately involved in orchestral compositions. My x fiancé was an opera diva soprano in NYC, but had attended the Charter Music School of UNC. I had never been properly introduced to opera, well she certainly was a lesson… Who could sing in perfect pitch in Italian, German, French… With no assistance from electronics, mic, or amplification above the orchestra pit (they all have not vanished). But instilled a respect for opera, that up until that moment, I thoughtlessly considered an art reserved for royal snobs. Consider the only other opera I had ever attended was The Grand Ole Opry House in Nashville to listen to Dolly and Hank. We went to see a performance of Puccini’s “Tosca”, at the Opera Theater in Charlotte… which almost had me change my religion. She was sooo Jewish;)
Thank you Doc! Those were quit some experiences I had, and cherish the opportunity to have lived them. Your ex fiancé sounds like a very talented singer 🎶
She provided, a lesson, an insight into the discipline required, years that go into a single performance... As that was the same stuff of your act. Simply beautiful. I hope you don’t mind I reposted your act, and have it as a draft on the home page for Psychic News Network UK.
Royalty-free is free for a reason--so true! 🤣 Music is magic and magic is music, indeed! I feel like both are necessary to truly feel alive. I love reading about your experiences and adventures, I hope you keep 'em coming!
Thank you so much! I’m happy you got some enjoyment from that line about royalty free music! 😆 I appreciate so much you taking the time to read them. It’s fun for me to relive my memories and share them. Blessings to you and your family 🤗
Fabulous that you spent time and dinners with Erich Kunzel. He is a legend and much loved by all .
I lived in Cinti for ten years while my son attended the SCPA. That was in the 80’s. By the time you were there, he was in NYC and probably touring in the live show of The Bear in the Big Blue House during the 90’s.
