Invaluable essay, I must confess that I needed to read this, as I'm constantly wondering if the Defiance Press contract I have to pay for, the financial crunch I'm in, is simply a matter of my needing to humble myself more and come back to it and accept defeat or boulder past and do as Caesar did and toss the die and hope for the best.
So this is one essay I can very much relate to and that is a must-read for all artists and writers hereon Substack who are just starting their careers.
Sending you much love, brothers, thank you! I'm so blessed every day to have beautiful people like yourselves every day in my life to bring me joy through your writing, and being authentic personalites with caring, empathetic, and loving people. I am happy to call you my friends. Happy Thanksgiving weekend guys! 🤎💛♥️🧡❤️
Thank you Perry, yes that’s what I believe, but honestly I’ve been fortunate to not have ever had a regular job, with the exception of working at an ice cream parlor when I was a teen, and a lifeguard in my late teens and young adult. Those jobs were enjoyable snd fun! Carefree, and I had all my free time to myself. Sending you much love and hugs enjoyed your Canadian Thanksgiving as we are enjoying our American Thanksgiving this week! Stay amazing! ✨💜✨
Very well articulated Charlotte! It is very important to train ourselves mentally to accept NOs in life without taking it too personally - our EGO should never get in the way of us discovering who we were truly meant to be! Instead of asking “Why me?”, if we just reframe the question to “WHAT CAN I LEARN FROM THIS ?” or “WHAT IS THIS TRYING TO TEACH ME?”, we can truly get some amazing answers and epiphanies … thank you so much for sharing this as I TRULY NEEDED TO SEE THIS TODAY 😊
I think sometimes it’s difficult to separate our ego from our inner self, or a spirit. So when we are confronted with an ego buster, our confidence goes crazy. When we separate ourselves from our ego we can see how our ego can take over and control responses to situations. What can I learn from this? We have to stop and practice this response. I hope you are enjoying a gorgeous fall Thanksgiving weekend! Sending you my love!♥️
Yes, thank you Ismael! I greatly appreciate your support and happy this resonated with you! I hope you are enjoying a beautiful Thanksgiving weekend!🧡♥️💛🤎
This was a good read, Charlotte, with many important lessons. When life seems to let us down and our dreams shatter, we do need to learn and move on. Acceptance is one of the most difficult things to learn, I think.
I think, but sometimes our dreams are shattered because they just aren’t meant to be. There is another path for you to take. It might be for protection to keep you away from certain individuals people and situations. I do know when you trust in the divine comedy movies going to keep you on the right path trust the journey, right? Sending you much love those incredible Thanksgiving! American Thanksgiving! Lol! ✨💜✨
I believe it is essential to follow one's passions, and your father was a wise man to instill that in you. In my 30 years as a therapist in Studio City, California, I have seen a lot of people in the entertainment industry. Some people make it in Hollywood, some give up because it's too much, and others keep following their dreams and find alternative ways to achieve their goals. I do know following one's dreams and passions will take you in a direction that can be very fruitful. Some can lead to amazing things, even in unexpected ways. I have learned a lot myself from the ride. I probably would not write on Substack as a medium if it weren't for Hollywood. I wish you the best. You have many talents, and you don't have to because some studio takes a turn; you don't have to.
What a Kolinka dink! I lived in Studio City for about seven years in the late 70s and early 80s! I loved it there. I lived just off Laurel Canyon Boulevard near Moorpark in a cute house, and I used to walk to That little shopping center across from CBS where there was a bagel shop called I and Joy bagels every morning! I still crave their bag lol! Lol!
In your work, you have gotten to know people are you who’s dreams have been shattered, and those who have become successes. In my experience though, most the time people go through a few shattered dreams before their dreams come true. Thank you, and hope you enjoyed a wonderful Thanksgiving! 🤎♥️🧡❤️💛
Thank you for this beautiful essay Charlotte! How crushed you must have been when the tv deal fell apart. But thank you for the reminder that when we hear no, it’s because something better awaits.
Charlotte, I saw you liked my note and of course I need to snoop around your publication. And I found this? I admire your perseverance, but the phrase 'casting couch' had me needing both a stiff drink and a stronger firewall. The part about the ABC executives swapping magicians like bad poker hands? Devastating.. yes and somehow still funny.
I see you as the one still standing, umbrella drink in hand, looking out for the next ship. That’s the magic you’re creating now, on your terms.
Brilliant piece. I've subscribed, and looking forward to more of your work.
The Glory is in the struggle- reaching, and failing, then striving again. With God at the Helm, our lives are Adventures, lived on the high seas of His Love!💖Thank you Charlotte, for sharing your Adventure with us!
This is such a great message. I truly believe that when life throws up these scenarios that something positive is on the horizon or that we have something still to learn. It can be so helpful to look ahead.
Thanks for this. I was having “maybe I should give up” thoughts this past week and I needed to read this for a whole host of reasons. Love to you and hope you had a wonderful Thanksgiving weekend!
This is crazy. My Office is still in Moorpark and Colfax. I have been in that Office since 1995. Right now, I am working remotely from home. At least 75 % of my clients were in the entertainment industry for quite a while. I still have plenty. I have seen incredible things happen. A woman from Australia sent a script to Steven Spielberg, and they made it. I knew people at all levels, from showrunners to directors, producers, studio executives, etc. I have seen amazing things happen for people and some disappointment with people getting back up and making it. I felt like I was
in the entertainment industry. I couldn't do much; sometimes, reporters would come by my Office for a sound bite about some psych or health story. I am sure you know this, but sometimes it is who you know. Sometimes, I played agent and put people together. I also noticed that people who got more creative, like doing webisodes, started to get in through another door. The fact that you were so close at Disney, even though I am sure it is a terrible disappointment, was terrific. Disney has had significant layoffs every few years, and a new CEO comes in. The last time they bought 21st century so everything got messed around. I have seen people lose their spirit and go back to their hometown. Some have made it in smaller markets. I do know the head of Adult Swim well. If you think it would be helpful to talk with her, I can call her. She is usually busy, but we do catch up with each other. If you think that would be helpful, maybe we could talk more, and I could contact her and introduce you. If your gut tells you to keep going don't stop. Sorry wrote War and Peace. I hope that is a bit helpful

You as well madame, and Happy Thanksgiving weekend to you! X)
Good advice, Charlotte. I think it can boil down to, no matter what field or profession you are in or do, "You are not your job."

Above all, we must press on. An excellent reminder, Charlotte. And sometimes luck comes unexpectedly and at an unfamiliar time.
